TRYOUTS

2010: August 23-25 8:00AM

The following is some information that you will need to know heading into tryouts and the upcoming volleyball season.  Parents, please read all information carefully and go over it with your daughter so you both understand the requirements and expectations that go along with being a part of the Sheldon Volleyball program.

How are Tryouts Conducted?

Tryouts will be a two to three-day process with two sessions each day.  The first morning session will consist of physical testing (20 minute run, pushups, sit ups, quickness and jumping tests) as well as volleyball skills testing.  We will use this information to help group the players when they return for the afternoon session.

The four other sessions will be used to evaluate the players in drills and game situations as well as by their specific position. The final sixth session will be used to work with the tentatively formed teams, after cuts have been made.  All the coaches will watch and move players between courts to see how they perform in various situations.  All sessions will conclude with a conditioning drill.

The morning of the third day, during the final tryout period, teams will be formed.  Players will be informed of their team placement at the end of the Wednesday morning session with a private letter. If players do not make a team, they do not return for the afternoon session.  We will be fielding three teams for the season and we try our best to make them with no more than 9-12 players. However, the program reserves the right to carry as many or as few as we deem necessary to be competitive.

Although we do not like to cut players from the program, this is required from year to year.  If there is not a place for a player on a team they will be notified during the final session of tryouts (Wednesday morning).  Please note that there are other reasons, than lack of space, for cutting players. This can be a very difficult process for both the coach and player and we do our best to handle these situations with honesty and empathy. Any player finding herself in this position is eligible to become a team manager. Manager duties include everything from taking stats, filling water bottles, shagging balls, and assisting coaches during both practices and competitions. Some things to keep in mind before you tryout:

Some things to keep in mind before you tryout

  • Sheldon Volleyball is very competitive and has high expectations, as well as an extensive time commitment

  • Juniors and sophomores will not be eligible for JV2, so if you do not make Varsity or JV1, we unfortunately cannot put you on a team

  • Summer camp attendance, open gym attendance and off-season endeavors are not considered during tryouts. We evaluate based on what we see you do during those 2 days of tryouts, so bring your best!

  • Everyone should arrange tentative transportation home following the morning session on Wednesday the 25th, which ends at 11:00am, in case you do not make a team.

What Happens Next?
If your daughter makes a team she will begin practice the next morning.  We will have “Daily Doubles” for the remainder of the next 2 weeks, with practices from 8:00-11:00 and 1:00-4:00. Players must attend every practice unless they cannot due to illness.  Injured players need to be at practice, daily, to watch and listen to what the team is working on.  If you have a conflict and need to miss a practice, the coach MUST be notified 24 hours in advance to clear the absence.  Sudden illness is the only excuse to omit these guidelines. The coaches reserve the right to shorten a practice or cancel a practice as they see fit during the season. Usually, the coaches surprise the players with a practice off late in the week of daily doubles (Thursday or Friday afternoon).

A practice schedule and game schedule will be given to all players the first day of team practice.  In addition, a roster will be handed out.  Once school begins, practice will be immediately after school until 6:00. Varsity practice times may vary depending on post season advancement and team commitments.

Spirit Packs
During the first week of practice the players will receive their spirit packs. The spirit pack will cost about $100 this season. It also consists of 2 T-shirts, 2 pairs of spandex shorts, knee pads and a sweatshirt. Socks may be included depending on the success of summer fundraising. The players will keep these items at the end of the season. Please be prepared to give a check to your coach during the first week of practice for these items. If you cannot afford to pay for the spirit pack please see Kandice Feola to discuss fundraising and alternatives.

Fundraising
As most of you are aware, fundraising has become a critical part of high school athletics.  Our budget from the district covers a very small portion of our expenses so we are all required to pitch in to make ends meet.  Please visit the FUNDRAISING link for information on program fundraisers and Individual Fundraising opportunities.
