Mission Statement

We believe that volleyball should be played at a fast, competitive speed that requires the utmost levels of physical endurance, strength and technical capability in order to be successful. Our program is proud to harbor athletes who are both physically and mentally prepared to excel and achieve the highest available successes presented. We are determined to be of the highest caliber and sportsmanship among the opposing schools within our state.

In order to achieve such a high level of performance we must strive to work harder and longer than our opponents and simply be better in every aspect of the game.

That is Sheldon Volleyball.

Varsity Coaching Philosophy

The overall philosophy can be encompassed by one word: Efficiency. We are looking for our players to produce consistent results. If we NEED players to dig balls, then we EXPECT them to dig balls. If we need kills, we EXPECT players to get kills. The methods by which these results are achieved are flexible and dependent on the players’ strengths. Offensive technique is derived from a basic foundation but adapted to each player’s natural tendencies to ensure success. Defensive technique is, however, meticulously structured in order to maintain our systems and effectiveness. Players require high levels of discipline and coach-ability, with regard to technique, to make the Varsity team. Systems and strategies are in place to make the game run swiftly and smoothly with little confusion or unnecessary movement. Players must be able to run these systems consistently and adequately to be on the court. The six players who come to practice, work the best together to produce the best results, consistently, with the best attitude and sportsmanship, will be on the court.

Defense: We are very dedicated to passing technique and covering our side of the floor. Defense must be fast, accurate and efficient. Teams who can out defend can easily win any match. Defense does not function without ongoing communication that is both clear and concise. Defensive players must know their side of the court and where their teammates are at all times in order to adequately defend their side. Defense should be graceful, effortless, and above all, efficient.

Offense: As a hitter you have one job, to get kills. It doesn’t matter how hard or fast the ball hits the floor, as long as it hits the floor. Front row players must be dependable and educated as to how they can get a kill when we need it most, which is always. Technique is not as much of an issue as results. Every contact should be made with the intent to score or to set up an opportunity to score. There is to be no wasted swings or unforced errors. Players must function at high speeds while hitting sets that are primarily under the height of the antenna. Offense must be aggressive, tactical, and above all, efficient.
